Keys for kids
Also for the littles. Young households might choose, after Keys for Kids, to go directly to praise and prayer.
- God promises a rest for His people.
- That rest is finally realized when we are in Heaven.
- Until then, a sabbath rest remains for us.
Questions
(Some read the ?s before the notes/ ask them after.)
- What is the final rest of the Christian?
- What other rests are mentioned or suggested in Heb. 3?
- How can we make every effort to enter God’s rest?
Notes
(See Saturday for authors.)
The Holy Spirit continues to teach us by the negative example of Israel in the wilderness. Even though they received the good news (gospel) they refused to believe and obey. These Hebrew Christians, and we ourselves, are called to hear and obey and enter God’s promised rest. In fact, we are urged to strive, or make every effort, to enter that rest. But what rest? Six rests are mentioned or suggested here.
- God’s rest at creation when He set the pattern of 6-days labor and a day of rest.
- The Old Testament sabbath rest that followed God’s creation-rest pattern, found in the fourth commandment.
- Israel’s rest found in living in the promised land, which was denied to those who refused to believe and obey God.
- Our salvation rest in the finished work of Christ. We rest in His finished work rather than seeking salvation by our own works.
- A New Testament sabbath rest that remains for the people of God (v. 9).
- Our eternal rest found in Him who has ceased from His labor (v. 10).
Therefore, since it remains for some to enter [that rest] ... Let us, then, make every effort to enter [it] (v. 6, 11).
