Who are your leaders and how do you relate to them? Your parents. Your teachers or bosses. Your church elders. Watch how they live and imitate their faith. The call here (Heb 13:7, 17) is especially to your church elders. They teach you God's word. They live an observable life of faith. They watch out for your souls—a vital task and one for which they will give an account to God.

Of course, far greater than any merely human leaders is the eternal Jesus Christ. So, follow your leaders—in the Lord Jesus. And follow Jesus Himself. Remember His sacrifice. Don't go back to the sacrifices of OT Judaism. Even those OT sacrifices pointed to Jesus. Nothing from the sin offering (Ex 29:14) and the atonement offering (Lev 16:27) was eaten by the priests as the other sacrifices were. Instead, it was carried outside the camp and burned. So, Jesus was sacrificed outside the city—at Golgotha.

Brooks reminds us that we, who have believed upon the Lord Jesus Christ for the eternal salvation of our souls, continually 'eat' of him—which means, we partake spiritually day by day of all the benefits of his sacrifice, all the blessings that flow from Calvary, all the glories that are wrapped up in him, as those who, through grace alone, have been blessed 'in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places' (Ephesians 1:3). It is this 'feeding' upon Jesus which explains how our hearts are 'strengthened by grace' (13:9). What more could we possibly desire?
