Notes

(See Saturday for authors.)

What do we need? What do all Christians need? We need a high priest to appear before God for us, and Jesus is Who we need.

Throughout the Old Testament, God gave His people a system of priests to help them worship Him. That system was good, but it was not perfect. So, God made something even better. He gave us a better priest, Jesus.

In Genesis 14:17–20, we learn a little about a man named Melchizedek. He was a priest of God Most High. He blessed Abraham and praised God. After a battle, Abraham gave Melchizedek one-tenth of everything he had won.

King David tells us here about a special priest who would be after the order of Melchizedek. People may have wondered how Jesus could be the great High Priest, because He came from the tribe of Judah; the Old Testament priests came from Aaron’s family. But God the Father chose Jesus to be our High Priest, just as David prophesied.

Jesus’s priesthood is different from the other Old Testament priests because it lasts forever. He will never grow old, retire, or be replaced. Jesus will always be our High Priest.

So, we can be joyful, because Jesus is our forever Priest!
