Notes

(See Saturday for authors.)

If you drive, do you always go the same way to get to a specific place? If your parents are the drivers, do they? Sometimes when we go a different way, we might be a bit nervous that it might not be a good way—that it might even be the wrong way.

God tells us here that there is a new way to go—and that we don’t need to be nervous. We can go with boldness. We can go with confidence because we go with the perfect sacrifice of Christ having prepared the way for us.

For these Hebrew Christians, and for us, as Hughes explains, their confident access comes from the torn curtain of Christ’s crucified body. The rending of Jesus’ flesh on the cross, which brought his death, perpetrated a simultaneous tearing from top to bottom of the curtain that had barred the way into the Holy of Holies (Matthew 27:51). They walked confidently through the torn curtain of Christ, so to speak, into the presence of the Father.

Because of our confidence in Jesus’s work, let us draw near to God in Jesus’s perfection. Let us continue to be confident—not because of anything in us, but because Jesus is faithful. Let us provoke good in each other. And let us not neglect assembling together for church. Are you doing these things because of Jesus’s perfect sacrifice? Let’s do them and keep on doing them until Jesus comes back!
