Questions

(Some read the ?s before the notes/ ask them after.)
  1. Talk about some verses where but God brings good news.
  2. What is the essence of but Christ here in our reading?
  3. How do we receive this good news of what Christ offers?

Notes

(See Saturday for authors.)

But. Such a small word with such a big impact. Sometimes the impact can be negative—I like you, but … bringing bad news to what seemed like good news. But many times in the Bible (Gen 8:1, Rom 5:8, Eph 2:4 to name only a few) we find the words but God bringing great news! Having heard in our reading about the limitations of the Old Covenant (even with its divinely given regulations), the Holy Spirit now tells us, but Christ—that is, because of Christ everything is better.

Christ entered the most holy place once and for all (and gave us access through Himself). Christ offered Himself as the perfect lamb to save us. Christ mediates the new covenant so that we can have an eternal inheritance. Christ entered the heavenly sanctuary once for all to remove our sin with the sacrifice of Himself.

How do we take advantage of that work? By God’s grace granting us faith to believe that Jesus is the perfect, necessary, and sufficient sacrifice for us. That is, for a person to say, I need to be saved from my sins and I trust the person and work of Jesus for me.

For the Hebrew Christian experience, the old ways were good, but Christ is better. For us, our experience was bad—without Christ, without citizenship in the people of God, without hope, without God (Eph 2:12–13). But Christ brought salvation to us—to me. That is great news indeed!
