Notes
(See Saturday for authors.)
Yesterday we saw that the church is joined together by a truth. There are many truths that many people knew, but the church John wrote to did not know. They did not know that North and South America existed. They did not know the speed of light. So, what truth joins a church together?
John references this truth in verse 3 when he refers to God the Father and to Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father. These titles sound like the summary of his gospel in John 20:31, “that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.” What did this church believe?
First, they believed that there was a man named Jesus. Second, they believed that this man is the Son of God. This means that he is also divine. Third, they believed that this man is the Christ. Christ is a man set apart to do the work of saving God's people. To put it simply, this church believed that their savior was Jesus, who was both God and man. We must not forget this truth that holds the church together.
