What is repentance unto life?
Repentance unto life is a saving grace, whereby a sinner, out of a true sense of his sin, and apprehension of the mercy of God in Christ, doth, with grief and hatred of his sin, turn from it unto God, with full purpose of, and endeavour after, new obedience.
Notes
(See Saturday for authors.)
This passage is Luke’s version of the Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5-7. It is likely the same version just presented differently for Luke’s purposes and audience. As you read it, you’ll find that both sermons are largely the same.
Within this sermon, there’s a thread that can be traced throughout every section. Jesus is describing the kind of people who inherit His kingdom. We enter in by grace, and we prove that Christ has brought us in by bearing good fruit—building our house upon the rock.
Therefore, there are only two kinds of people who hear Jesus’s words. There are those who are humble, who will listen to Jesus’s words and obey them, and then there are those who are proud and will not listen to Jesus’s words or do what He says.
The question stands for you. Are you poor in spirit? Are you like a good tree bearing good fruit? Are you the wise man who builds his house on the rock?
