Jesus began His public ministry at about age 30. (John probably was about age 30 when his public ministry began, as well.) Levites in the Old Testament also started their service at this age (Num 4:47). It’s interesting to me that I was about 30 years old when I began my gospel ministry. The Bible doesn’t specify a required age, though, for beginning gospel ministry.

But rather than telling us about Jesus’s public ministry (yet), Luke goes back in time and tells us about Jesus’s human ancestors—77 of them. It seems this is Jesus’s ancestry through Mary—her father Heli likely having adopted Joseph as his heir. Luke points out that Jesus, the promised Messiah, descended from David (2 Sam 7:12-13), from Judah (Gen 49:10), from Abraham (Gen 22:18), from Adam (Gen 3:15), from God Himself. Jesus was descended from sinners like these human ancestors so he could save sinners like you.

The Jews of Jesus’s time would have disqualified Him from claims to be King and Messiah if they could have proven He did not have the right ancestry. He did. They couldn’t.

Jesus made the world—all very good (Gen 1:31). Adam sinned and made it very bad as it filled with his sin and the sin of his descendants. Jesus, eternally God the Son, came into this world to redeem a people to Himself and to make them new (2 Cor 5:17).
