Notes
(See Saturday for authors.)
In 2024, much of North America witnessed a total solar eclipse. You can watch video of it here: bit.ly/eclipsePs19. Psalm 19 tells us that the heavens and the earth declare God’s glory—Loud and clear—with no words, no language, no language barriers. Romans 1:18-20 tells us that it is so clear that all people are without excuse if they reject God.
Why is an eclipse so amazing? People spent millions of dollars traveling to see it. Shortly after we moved to Australia in 2006, I watched a recording of TV coverage of a total solar eclipse in Turkey. The film crew brought 2 tons of equipment! When an eclipse happens, people shout and cheer and cry. Even the scientists who explain the process quite mechanically, quite naturally, are often moved. Why? Because it is an event when God (by his providential care of the universe he made) changes what is normal and daily. In the words of Psalm 19, God puts the sun back in its tent, not at night, but in the middle of the day. And this unusual event, like the daily event, declares God’s glory. The sun, hidden behind our moon, does not hide the Glory of our God.
Glorify God for his Son—not the s-u-n which can be hidden by the moon, but the S-o-n who is not hidden and who upholds the universe by the word of his power.
