Notes

Hebrews 4 shows us the sad reality that many of the visible people of God did not enter God’s promised rest. This was due to their unbelief and disobedience. Here in our reading Jesus speaks both harsh warnings of woe and a gracious invitation of rest.
Don’t reject Jesus’s call to repentance. He is the Messiah about whom John told. The people thought they wanted Him. They went out to hear John and many of them realized they didn’t really want John or Jesus. They rejected, as unbelievers will do too often today, both Christ’s messenger and Christ himself. John was rejected for his severe lifestyle. Jesus was rejected for his friendship with sinners.
Those who reject Christ are severely judged. Yet, Jesus invites sinners to Himself. Jesus offers you rest through submission to Him. The offer is made to all who are weary and burdened. Even to the foolish and disobedient. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Jesus offers rest to the weary and burdened. Don’t doubt Him. Don’t reject Him. Submit to Him as your Sovereign King. He is the gracious King and only in Him will you find rest.
