Notes
(See Saturday for authors. Today’s notes are from a commentary on Ephesians by Tony Merida.)
This passage is not antiquated; it is ageless. While it may seem old-fashioned, it could not be more relevant. …
This passage is ageless because humanity has not changed. Our spiritual needs have not changed, and the evil one is still active. He is just as active now as he was in the garden. Believers in Ephesus, and believers in every city, have the same need for Christ and His mighty power.
In addition, this passage is not ridiculous; it is rooted in the Old Testament. While Paul is certainly aware of Roman soldiers, and was maybe even looking at them at the time of writing, his language is more influenced by the majestic warfare imagery of the Old Testament, especially from Isaiah. The Old Testament often refers to God (and His Messiah) as a warrior and His people as “troops” who are in need of God’s strength. …
This passage is rooted in the Old Testament imagery of the King of kings. It points us to the nature of the Messiah and His mighty works. … We must remember … the fact that the critical battle has already been won! There is just a mop-up operation going on. Christ is Lord, and we are in Him.
