The work in building the tabernacle was to be done as the Lord had commanded. And it was. However, the tabernacle reminds us that we have a problem. This tent was set up for daily and yearly offerings—sacrifices to God on behalf of his people that were needed because of God’s people sinning against His commands. Too often God’s people then—and God’s people now (us!)—don’t do exactly as God has commanded. So, this tent ended up sprinkled and splattered with the blood of bulls and goats—which points to the taking away of sin but cannot actually in itself take away the sin.

Additionally, the tabernacle showed how much the sin of God’s people separated them from Himself. A curtain separated everyone from the Most Holy Place (Exodus 26:33–34). Like this curtain, our sin separates us from God (Isaiah 59:2). Only once each year would the High Priest go beyond this curtain into the Most Holy Place. The High Priest would always do this with sacrifices (Heb 8:3) which he would offer for his own sin and the people’s sin.

All of this pointed to Christ. He would do everything exactly as God had commanded. He is the minister of the true tabernacle (Heb 8:2). And if you dwell in Christ by faith, He has obtained for you eternal redemption! (Heb 9:12)
