Questions

(Some read the ?s before the notes/ ask them after.)
  1. What does the Nicene Creed say about Jesus?
  2. What does Hebrews 1:1-4 say about Jesus?
  3. How can one find purification from their sins?

Notes

(See Saturday for authors.)

I believe in … one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made. …

So states the Nicene Creed about the Lord Jesus Christ. This creed was a product of a church council at Nicaea in 325 AD (the counsel at Constantinople in 381 AD added a statement about the Holy Spirit). The aim of this counsel was to clarify for the church the nature of Jesus Christ. Arius was teaching that there was a time when Christ was not. This counsel developed this creed from the teaching of the Bible that Jesus is very God of very God and of one substance with the Father.

Our text provides evidence of that nature of Jesus, God’s Son. As Gooding notes, Jesus is not only a spokesman for God; in his essential nature he is God. When you meet him, when you hear him, you meet God and you hear God.

In this Jesus, and only in Him, can we find purification for our sins.
