Notes
(See Saturday for authors.)
The author of Hebrews tells us that this important message that we must pay attention to was spoken through angels. Though we don’t have a specific and clear account of angels telling men of God’s law, Hughes notes that Stephen, in his famous sermon, referred to Moses as being “with our fathers and with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai; and he received living words to pass on to us” (Ac 7:38; cf. Ac 7:53; Gal 3:19).
This message was binding and had just punishment for disobedience. So, if a word from angels is that important, this word announced by Jesus is even more binding. The gospel is announced by Jesus, confirmed by eyewitnesses, and testified by God the Father. So, pay attention. It is important.
How will we escape if we neglect this great salvation? The implied answer is, We can’t. So listen. Pay attention. But you must do more than listen. As Gooding comments, a girl may enjoy hearing her boyfriend repeat how much he loves her, and what he will do for her if only she will consent to be his wife. But hearing him say it over and over again is not enough. If she is ever going to be his wife, she must believe him, and respond to him, and say ‘Yes’ to his proposal.
Accept this great salvation offered to you freely in the gospel!
