Notes
(See below for all authors.)
Living by faith is demonstrated by living in good works. These good works never earn God’s favor. Instead, they show that God has already given us His favor and has saved us.
The alternative is to claim faith but live with no works to demonstrate faith (James 2:17). Or as the writer of Hebrews puts it, to deliberately and continually sin leads to eternal punishment by God. As we have already seen in Hebrews, this can’t mean that someone who is truly a Christian sins so much that they lose their salvation. Instead, it means they were never saved in the first place. And to find ourselves in the presence of God in His judgment, that comes after we die, without the righteousness of Christ protecting us is a terrifying thing.
Instead of rejecting Christ, we are urged to persevere in Him. These Hebrews had endured sufferings. They had been mocked and mistreated for their faith. Some had even been put in jail and had their things taken by those who persecuted them. But they kept persevering. They kept living by faith. So must we.
