Notes
(See below for all authors.)
This Son, in whom God has spoken is now revealed to us gloriously. Andrews notes that we see here Christ’s limitless inheritance, creative power, divine glory, perfect representation of the Father, awesome providence, single handed redemption, and exaltation to the throne of God. Hughes puts it simply, Christ is: Inheritor, Creator, Sustainer, Radiator, Representor, Purifier, Ruler.
Space here does not permit unfolding each of those seven characteristics. Let’s consider three. Christ created the world. First, He was the Person of the Trinity through whom the world was created. Everything that was made was made by Him.
Second, He represents God exactly—being the image of the invisible God. (Col. 1:15). Calvin states that the author’s purpose is *to build up our faith, so that we may learn that God is made known to us in no other way than in Christ. *
Finally, He is the one who alone purified us from our sins. No one else could do it. The Old Testament sacrifices only pointed to an eventual fully-effective sacrifice. Jesus did that. Do you know this Jesus? Has He purified your sins?
