Questions

(Some read the ?s before the notes/ ask them after.)
  1. What were the brothers doing?
  2. How did Gaius help the brothers?

Notes

(See below for all authors.)

Third John focuses on the idea that those who believe, work together. John is happy to hear that Gaius is walking in the truth. How does John know this? Because he heard that Gaius was helping those who went out for the sake of the name. Today we might call such men missionaries or evangelists. They are going to the Gentiles to tell them about Jesus.

How did Gaius help these brothers? He sent them on their journey. Gaius was welcoming these brothers into his home, feeding them and giving them a place to sleep and rest as they passed through on their way to serve. Giaus gives us an example of what love is. These brothers had a need. They needed dinner and a place to sleep. Gaius saw their need, saw they knew the truth, and saw he had the resources to meet that need. Love for one another is often shown by recognizing what the need is and doing what I can to meet that need.
