Notes
(See below for all authors.)
Jesus had to suffer. His death was planned between God the Father and God the Son way before the earth was created (Eph 1:4). It wasn’t a surprise to Jesus, though it was a terrible burden for Him leading up to it and a horrible experience to go through.
It shouldn’t have been a surprise to Jesus’s disciples. Over and over, Jesus told them it was coming. It was necessary. But they didn’t understand. The words were clear enough, but the idea that Jesus, God’s chosen and anointed One, would do that just didn’t make sense to them.
And even today, it doesn’t make sense to many people. They are happy to have Jesus as a good teacher and a life to imitate. But the path to a world where the effects of sin are overcome is in the suffering Savior. And when it doesn’t make sense, we have to listen to Jesus and believe God’s plan. As Mason reminds us, a sacrifice to address the flaws, failures and wickedness of the world was necessary. Jesus knew this. Jesus did this.
