Notes
(See Saturday for authors.)
Jesus quotes the first phrase of this Psalm to prove to His opponents that the Messiah (Himself) is greater than David. So, how could the Messiah be David’s Son? The only way is that the Lord Jesus Christ, who, being the eternal Son of God became man, and so was and continues to be God and man, in two distinct natures and one person for ever (WSC 21). So the Son of God is now both true God and true man, yet one Christ, the only Mediator between God and man (WCF 8:2).
As our Lord and Mediator, Jesus makes us willing volunteers in the holy war He is waging against all of His enemies until they are made His footstool. We must remember that our warfare is waged with spiritual weapons, not physical ones (2 Cor 10:4-5). Our greatest weapon is the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God (Eph 6:17).
But even more important than our weapons is our King, Jesus, who is seated at God the Father’s right hand even as He rules over men and nations. And He will win! All nations, all people, will bow the knee to King Jesus (Isa 45:23, Rom 14:11, Phil 2:10).
