Questions

(Some read the ?s before the notes/ ask them after.)
  1. What makes a church like a family?
  2. What makes a church different than a family?

Notes

(See Saturday for authors.)

Second John starts differently than any other book in the Bible. It is a letter addressed to "the elect lady." Sometimes he speaks to this lady as one person, "you," and sometimes as many people, "you all." Why would he do this? Because the elect lady is a group of people that relate to each other closely enough to be thought of as one.

John gave us a picture by calling the church an elect lady. As a family has many people who think of themselves as one entity, so a church has many people who think of themselves as one entity. A family is connected by marriage relationship and parent-child relationship. But what is the connection in a church?

You probably heard John say the word "truth" several times. These are people whom John loves in truth, who know the truth, and who walk in the truth. This truth is what joins them together. The church is a group that relates to a truth. Take that truth away and you lose what joins that church together. Tomorrow we will think about what truth that is.
