Notes
(See Saturday for authors.)
Who are you? Who do people who know you say that you are? I’m Pastor Ed, son of Carl and Barbara; husband to Nancy; father to Allen, Zachary, Charity, Maria, Tamara, and Benjamin; grandfather to 24; pastor of Springs Reformed Church. People say who you are based on seeing your life.
So it was with Jesus. And who is He? The crowds said He was John the Baptist, Elijah, or another Old Testament prophet come back to life. People heard Jesus preach and teach, watched or heard of His miracles. Geldenhuys suggests that the crowds were thoroughly conscious that he was an exceptional, supernatural person; but because they had always pictured the Messiah as an earthly ruler, they were unable to see the true Christ in him.
So, if you ask people around you, Who is Jesus? what do they say? It is a very important question. We read in Luke’s orderly account that Jesus is a sending master thought of by some as merely a curiosity. He provides for needs abundantly. But as Peter noted, Jesus is God’s Messiah. But not the political Messiah the crowds longed for. Instead, Jesus is the one sent by God to save His people from their sins.
Do you know Him that way?
