WSC #31

What is effectual calling?

Effectual calling is the work of God’s Spirit, whereby, convincing us of our sin and misery, enlightening our minds in the knowledge of Christ, and renewing our wills, he doth persuade and enable us to embrace Jesus Christ, freely offered to us in the gospel.

(2 Timothy 1:9; 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14; Acts 2:37; Acts 26:18; Ezekiel 36:26-27; John 6:44-45; Philippians 2:13)

Notes

(See Saturday for authors.)

After being tempted by the devil, Jesus began His public ministry. Many people praised Him (vs15, 22). Many rejected Him (vs23-27). Even this early in His ministry, some tried to kill Him (vs28-30).

But, of course, it was not yet time for Jesus to die. First, He had ministry to do to demonstrate that He was the Lord’s Messiah. By the help of God the Holy Spirit he would make that clear. His Father, as Isaiah had predicted, sent Jesus to evangelize, to heal, to free from captivity and oppression. All this was to declare the year of the Lord’s favor.

Way back in the Old Testament, God had established a Year of Jubilee (Ex 25). Like this year of the Lord’s favor, the Year of Jubilee was a year of forgiveness, of release, of return. What that year looked forward to, Jesus ushered in by His life and ministry.

The blind would see, the paralyzed would walk, the deaf would hear, the dead would rise, the evil spirits would be banished. This is good news! But the greatest news is that those bound in sin and misery would be set free by Jesus dying to pay the price for their sins and being raised from the dead victorious.
