Notes
(See Saturday for authors.)
The Edomites are no more. Few now remember Esau except for his folly. Obadiah foresaw this (Ob. 1:16). But God is so rich in mercy that even as he warned of their destruction he promised to take in the weak and helpless of Edom (Je. 49:11). In the days of his flesh, this came to pass, as the descendants of Edom, called Idumeans, left Mount Esau to meet Jesus! (Mk. 3:8). Though no survivor remains of Esau's house (Ob. 1:18), God sent the Savior to serve his offspring. By nature, we all were unholy like Esau. But by grace, Jesus took possession of our unholy nature, our "Mount Esau," and made it holy.
Jesus didn't stop there. Having made our nature holy, the Savior shares his "Spirit of holiness" (Ro. 1:4) with his holy ones, and they become little "saviors" (v. 21). These saviors are commissioned to "rule Mount Esau." Simply, Christians are to subdue their flesh, burning up all that remains of Edom in their nature. They also share the Gospel of the Kingdom with unholy people. Like their Savior, Christians are to burn as holy lights in the world, subduing their flesh and sharing the Gospel.
