  2. How do we gain love?

Notes

(See Saturday for authors.)

As we finish considering 2 John, I want to make sure we get one idea right. 2 John is a short letter, so John uses short phrases to remind us of big ideas. One important phrase is "has the Father and the Son." How does John think we come to have the Father and the Son? We might assume that he sees having the Father and Son as a reward for obeying Jesus and loving one another. But John says that the one who abides (or remains) in the teaching has the Father and the Son.

How does this relate to our love? In John 15, Jesus described Himself as the vine and His people as the branches. The branches bear fruit—like love—because they share in the life of the vine. The one who has the Son shares in His life, and it is this life that makes us love. We should not think of love as what we do to earn the Son, but as a gift given to us who believe the truth about the Son.
