Exodus tells us about Mount Sinai, the mountain where God gave His commandments to Israel. Even though the people could see and touch the mountain, they were not allowed to go up on it. Only Moses and Aaron could go near God to receive His commands.
God's commandments were not given because He wanted to be mean. He gave them because He loved His people and had already rescued them. As our catechism (WSC 44) teaches, God is our Lord, God, and Redeemer, so we should obey Him because of who He is and what He has done for us.
The mountain was a scary place because it showed God's great power and holiness. Mount Sinai was a terrifying sight and sound for Israel. God's power and presence was something Israel experienced, even from a distance, with their physical senses. Repeatedly when people in the Bible get a glimpse of God, they are terrified. We would be too.
Throughout the Bible, when people catch a glimpse of God's greatness, they are often afraid. We would feel the same way! But we also need to remember God's grace and love.
Today, we look to Jesus. He helps us understand God's love and mercy. We listen to Him when we read the Bible and hear God's Word taught at church. As we keep our eyes on Jesus, we can obey God with thankful hearts, knowing that He is both powerful and full of grace.
