Questions

(Some read the ?s before the notes/ ask them after.)
  1. How does God give endurance and encouragement?
  2. How does God give hope?
  3. How is God with His people?

Notes

(See Saturday for authors.)

Like the book of Hebrews, the book of Romans ends with several special blessings called benedictions. A benediction is a “good word.” When God gives a benediction, He is speaking a good word over His people. In Romans 15, each blessing begins with the words, “May the God...”

In verse 5, God is called the God who gives endurance and encouragement. The previous verse tells us that God gives these gifts through His Word, the Bible. So, when you read the Bible, expect God to encourage you and help you keep going when life is hard.

In verse 13, God is called the God who gives hope. Through Jesus Christ, He has given hope to the Gentiles, people from all nations, including most of us. This blessing reminds us that God does not give just a little hope; He causes our hope to overflow. Sometimes life can seem hopeless. We may struggle with sickness, broken relationships, forgiveness, or other difficulties. But God fills His people with hope that is greater than their circumstances. Because of that, we can put our trust in Him.

In verse 33, God is called the God of peace. And the blessing is wonderfully simple: God Himself is with His people. The eternal God does not leave us alone. His presence goes with all who belong to Him.

What a wonderful truth! The God of endurance, encouragement, hope, and peace is with us every day.
