Adam and Eve used to live in perfect friendship with God and with each other. Everything was good, and nothing was broken by sin yet. We don't know how long this lasted, but probably not very long.
One day, a serpent (Satan speaking through it) came to Eve and tried to trick her. He asked, "Did God really say...?" That question was meant to make Eve doubt God. It's the same kind of question we face, too: Who will we trust-God or someone else?
Eve listened to the serpent instead of listening to God. She believed the lie that the serpent's way would be better than God's way. So, she ate the fruit God had said not to eat. Then she gave some to Adam, and he ate it, too.
When Adam ate the fruit, everything changed. Sin entered the world. The Bible says that because Adam and Eve fell into sin, all people after them fell, too. Just like them, we sometimes listen to lies instead of listening to God.
Right after they sinned, Adam and Eve felt ashamed. They didn't even want each other to see them, so they tried to cover themselves with leaves. Soon they would try to hide from God, too.
Jesus, unlike Adam, perfectly resisted Satan's temptations.
