Paul really wanted to visit his friends in the city of Philippi again. But just in case he couldn't visit them, he wrote to remind them how to live as followers of Jesus.
The Philippians lived in the city of Philippi, but Paul said they also had a home in heaven because they belonged to Jesus. So, Paul wanted them to live like good citizens of both places-to let the good news about Jesus change how they acted every day. God wants the same thing for us.
Paul explained what this kind of life looks like:
- Standing strong and not giving up.
- Working together and not fighting with each other.
- Being brave, even when people don't like the message about Jesus, because Jesus will win in the end.
So, when we feel shaky, or when we argue, or when we're scared, we should look to Jesus. We should remember that God is still working in our hearts and won't stop. We should remember that suffering for Jesus is actually an honor-and He is right there with us when we hurt.
The Bible even says that God gives us the gift of believing in Jesus and the gift of suffering for Him. Both bring honor to Jesus.
And finally, we should remember that suffering won't last forever. But the glory and joy we will have with Jesus in heaven will.
