Catechism

WSC #90

How is the Word to be read and heard, that it may become effectual to salvation?

That the Word may become effectual to salvation, we must attend thereunto with diligence, preparation, and prayer; receive it with faith and love, lay it up in our hearts, and practice it in our lives.

(Proverbs 8:34; 1 Peter 2:1-2; Psalms 119:18; Hebrews 4:2; 2 Thessalonians 2:10; Psalms 119:11; Luke 8:15; James 1:25)

Notes

(See Saturday for authors.)

This is quite a picture! Wheels within wheels, Wheels moving without turning! Wheels tall and awesome; the Spirit telling the wheels where to go. Verse 12 tells us that the Spirit tells the creatures where to go, and the Spirit also thus moves the wheels. This Spirit is God the Holy Spirit.

This section also emphasizes that God is active on the earth! That He is everywhere (all 4 directions - N,S,E,W), in control of everything (moved by the Spirit), sees everything (the eyes).

How does that make you feel? It should bring comfort. Ezekiel and the exiles were not where they really wanted to be, but God was reminding them that He was there, He was in control, He was doing this not only for His glory, but also for their good.

Most importantly, JESUS came to the earth. It was not too little for Him to become a human being, even a baby born to Mary, fully God, fully man. He came for our good, for our salvation, and to glorify His Father.
