Is any man able perfectly to keep the commandments of God?

No mere man since the fall is able in this life perfectly to keep the commandments of God, but doth daily break them in thought, word, and deed.

Adam and Eve lived in sinless fellowship with each other and with God. We don’t know how long it was from the creation to the fall but likely not very long. Instead of listening to God and following His order of things, Eve listened to the serpent and Adam listened to Eve. No one, it seems, listened to God.

Satan, through a serpent, spoke to Eve and challenged God’s word and God’s authority. The question he asked, “Has God really said…?” led to a basic question all of us must answer. Who will we trust and believe—and obey?

Eve ultimately chose to believe Satan as he tricked her into thinking his way would be better for her and Adam than God’s way. She ate the forbidden fruit and gave some to Adam, and he ate too. When Adam ate the fruit, he fell from the condition of not having sinned. And, the Bible goes on to tell us, we fell, too. Like Adam and Eve, we often listen to and obey Satan’s lies.

Once Adam and Eve had sinned, they were ashamed—even of being seen by each other—and tried to hide by making clothes from leaves. Then they tried to hide from God as well.

Jesus, in His temptation from Satan, listened to God. In His victory over all of Satan’s temptations, Jesus provided His perfection for us.
